Your effective communication skills training tip for the day:
Danger Phrase: “I have a better idea.” Power Phrase: “And we could also consider…”
Sometimes when we get excited, we forget all of our professional communication training. The next time you feel like saying something such as, “No! I have a better idea…” (which can be insulting, and is an ineffective way to present a new idea), try today’s power phrase, “And we could also consider…” and watch the difference it makes. The recipient will be less defensive of the original idea, and more receptive to the new idea, which increases the odds of your idea becoming the winning one!
